FAQ's

Should I choose Synthetic hair?

Today's better quality synthetic/fibre wigs are virtually indistinguishable from human hair. Synthetic/fibre wigs are easier to care for & are lower priced. The special fibre hair used to make the wigs has' memory' which means it maintains its wave or curl, texture & volume even in damp conditions & require minimum upkeep, it is for this reason we recommend a synthetic wig for those undergoing chemotherapy. With the correct care a synthetic wig will last for 4-6 months.

Should I choose Human hair?

A human hair wig is of course the most natural option. However, human hair wigs are more expensive than synthetic/fibre & require a lot more care. Like our own hair they will lose their style if they get wet & frizz in damp conditions. Here at HRS we will advise you on which will be the best option for your individual needs.

How do I know what size to get?

The size of an average wig will fit 95% of clients. We will measure your head to make sure you get the best fit. Your wig should be worn on your natural hairline, approximately four fingers above the eyebrows. Wigs have adjustable velcro or elastic straps in the back so you can adjust for a secure & comfortable fit.

How do I know what colour to choose?

We can find a perfect match for you from our colour rings if you have already lost your hair. If you are starting chemotherapy we recommend that you come to us before starting your treatment so that we can match your own hair colour to your new wig.

How do I achieve a natural look?

Some wigs may require minimal shaping, where others may need thinning. We will style it professionally (at no extra cost) for you when you have your final fitting.

How do I care for my wig?

When not in use always store your wig on a mannequin or wig stand to maintain its shape. (A wig stand will be provided)

How often do I wash my synthetic or human hair wig?

Frequency of cleaning will depend on your environment, lifestyle & amount of perspiration. Suggested guidelines for cleaning are after 10-14 days of constant wear.

• Gently remove tangles with a wide tooth comb.
• Fill your sink with enough lukewarm water to submerge your wig. Mix in a small amount of wig shampoo or a mild baby shampoo (Johnsons or Elave). Soak your wig for 3-5 minutes. Gently swirl without rubbing
• Rinse with cool water to remove shampoo. gently press with a towel to remove excess water. Do NOT rub or wring
• Place on a folding wig stand (or tall vase), spray with leave in conditioner & allow to air dry. If synthetic do NOT use a hair dryer
• Once dry (usually overnight), style using your fingers or a wide tooth comb.

Can I use a hairdryer or curling tongs on my wig?

•Synthetic wig......No
•Heat stylable synthetic wig......Yes  (guidelines apply)
•Human hair wig......YES
Keep your synthetic wig away from any heat source, including standard hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners, oven, spa's etc. If you like to cook, here is a tip every wig wearer should know, never open the oven while wearing a synthetic/fibre wig. The sudden burst of heat could ruin your wig, even the hot steam from a boiling pot of water can cause damage. To avoid the kitchen disasters swap your wig for a scarf or bandana while cooking or better yet let someone else do the dirty work

We hope this information is helpful to you & we look forward to seeing you soon at HRS
